Overview
Elissa Domingo Badiqué is a 4th year PhD student in the department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. They are a Deans Excellence Scholar and FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellow. An engaged student leader, they served as a SEAP (Southeast Asia Program) Graduate Student Co-chair in co-hosting, co-organizing regular programming such as The Ronald and Janette Gatty Lecture Series, events, scholar dinners, and the SEAP Graduate Student Conference) for the academic year of 2021-2022. They also served as Kali Filipino martial arts Club co-President, and are currently the Vice President for SAAGA (Society for Asian American Graduate Affairs). They perform on campus as part of Cornell Filipino Association’s traditional and contemporary dance performance troupes. They also create content online in the form of drag, cosplay, skits, and dance choreography. They also create short-form computer animations which they plan to incorporate into a larger project on performances of queerness, race, and gender through digital bodies.
E enjoys pop culture and is passionate about incorporating it into their research on race and performance. They are particularly interested in researching embodiments of race and gender as they relate to fandom and performance. Their current project explores race, gender, and performance with particular focus on racialized performances of Asianness and Blackness in popular dance and aesthetics on New Media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. As such, they are especially interested in contemporary racial masquerade through popular dance and the phenomena popularly known as “Blackfishing” and “Asianfishing.”
