Join the Department of Performing and Media Arts for a Free Screening of Assemblage (1968, 59 minutes) on Wednesday, March 5, at 7:30 PM in the Film Forum, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. Assemblage was made by filmmaker Richard Moore in collaboration with choreographer Merce Cunningham, with sound score by John Cage, David Tudor, and Gordon Mumma. It is a groundbreaking film for public television, made on location in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square, converging dance, music, film, and urban design.
The screening will be followed by panel discussion with guest artist Patricia Lent, Co-Director of the Merce Cunningham Trust and esteemed company alumnus, moderated by Dr. Benjamin Piekut & Dr. Juan Manuel Aldape Muñoz with hosts Danielle Russo and Olive Prince. The event will also feature live demonstrations of Assemblage by Cornellians in rehearsal with Patricia Lent for PMA’s Annual Spring Dance Presenting Series on April 25-26.
Assemblage was originally funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and Ford Foundation. It was rediscovered after Cunningham's passing in 2009, upon which it was transferred to 16mm and colorized by artist and longtime collaborator Charles Atlas. This iconic project set precedent for what has become known as Dance on Camera, and its subsequent subgenres of Dance Film and Screendance, as studied and practiced at Cornell and worldwide.
Made possible by the Merce Cunningham Trust.
Special thanks for the generosity, support and participation of the Department of Performing and Media Arts and the Department of Music at Cornell University.
